History

The Baku metro, operational since November 6, 1967, had a fare of 5 'kopeyek' (USSR currency) until January 4, 1992.
In 1992, a single trip cost 15 kopeyek until March 1, 30 kopeyek until June, and 1 ruble (USSR currency) until December 17.
In June 1992, the token system was introduced for the first time. On December 1, 1993, the voucher system was introduced as a means of payment, and on January 1, 1994, the token system was reintroduced. Since that day, for the first time, the fare in the metro has been paid in the national currency - Azerbaijani manat (3 manats).
In 1994, the application of voucher and token systems replaced each other.
Starting March 1, 2006, the use of RFID (plastic) cards with a 2-manat deposit began as the only means of payment for fares.
On August 8, 2015, “BakiKart” was introduced in the Baku metro as part of the integrated payment system in public transport.
On July 30, 2018, the decisions of the Tariff (price) Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On regulation of passenger transport service tariffs provided by Baku Metro” dated September 30, 2009 No. 5 and November 24, 2011 No. 6 were canceled, and starting August 1, 2018, the fare for passenger transport service in the metro was set at 30 cents for one trip.
On January 31, 2023, Resolution No. 7 of July 30, 2018, of the Tariff (Price) Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On regulation of passenger transport service tariffs provided by Baku Metro” “On regulation of tariffs for passenger transport services in public transport” set the fare for passenger transport service in the metro at 0.40 AZN  per trip from February 3, 2023.
Starting September 6, 2023, the QR ticket payment method has been used in the Baku metro. As a pilot project, the possibility of payment by this method was created at “8 Noyabr” and “Khocesan” stations.
From December 30, 2023, the QR ticket payment system has been introduced at all stations (turnstiles) of the Baku metro.
