It is the first station of independence time, and one of the first two stations of "Avtovagzal-Memar Ajami" area of the third – Purple line of Baku Metro. It acts as a change to the Green line and therefore, bears the same name as a passageway of the Green line - Ajami Abubakr oglu Nakhchivani, the founder of the Nakhchivan School of Architecture. The construction of the station, the opening ceremony of which was also attended by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, began in September 2009. The design works were developed by a consortium including SYSTRA France, "MottMacdonald" UK  and "Saman" Korea. Preparations for the tunnel construction were started in February 2011, and the construction was launched in September of that year. In addition to the construction of tunnels by the contractor, eight inter-tunnel evacuation passageways and two ventilation shafts were built.
For the first time in the history of the Metro, "diaphragm wall" method was used in construction. This allowed reducing the cost of construction, utilizing state-of-the-art machinery and equipment, carrying out construction works in a limited area, with minimal environmental impact and without causing inconvenience to residents and the population, in an environmentally friendly way, with minimal noise. Here, for the first time, several stages of entry and exit levels (floor) have been built on deep-level stations by applying the world experience, which is of particular importance in terms of safety, comfort and emergency evacuation of passengers.
The total length of the station complex is 168.5 meters and it has three exits.  17 "Tugela" escalators manufactured by "Thyssen Krupp", Germany, along with four "Evolution" elevators for the passengers with disabilities have been installed at the station of a total area of about 12,000 square meters and at its exits. Mainly the local raw materials were used in the construction of the station. The platform of the station is 144 meters long, allowing a train of seven carriages, as opposed to five in the previous stations, to enter the platform.
The state-of-the-art electricity, ventilation and fire safety systems have been installed at the station.

Large-scale construction and landscaping works have been carried out around the station.

A fragment of famous song "Leyla" by Rauf Hajiyev, which is featured in the movie “Ahmad haradadir”, is played on the trains arriving at the station.
